Hurricane Matthew tore through Myrtle Beach, SC, in October, as it did many coastal cities along the Atlantic Ocean. Yet within two days, at least two inland golf courses on somewhat higher ground — Man-o-War and the Wizard — were already back open for play despite some trees losing the battle. A third course in the ownership trio of “Mystical Golf,” called the Witch, took longer to open due to major flooding in its surrounding swamp land and because Hurricane Matthew’s strong winds knocked down more than 100 trees, including a large one covering the road right at the front gate. But just as the month of November started, it was back open for play. Mystical Golf’s main attraction is providing three differing golf experiences among its offerings. While Man-o-War and the Wizard sit on adjacent property, and the Witch is located a couple miles away, none of the courses look or feel the same. “If you come and play my three golf courses, I want you to have three very different experiences, as if you went to a different country or a different era, with each golf course,” owner Claude Pardue said. “The golf courses have to have a natural magic in my opinion to do that.

With over a hundred golf courses in the Myrtle Beach, South Carolina area, it can be tough to choose a few for a golf getaway. Luckily the folks at Mystical Golf know how to entice you with three distinctive courses and great partners in town for deals on lodging, food, and entertainment. Designed by distinguished architect Dan Maples, the only features all three courses share are the number of holes - 18. For sheer beauty you can't beat The Witch. Taking your cart from the clubhouse to the front nine you quickly disappear into hundreds of acres of undisturbed wetlands. No houses or car noise, just alligators, blue herons, and the occasional fish jumping. Check out our full review of The Witch here. Sitting next to each other, but separated by a large lake, are The Wizard and Man O'War courses. With a fitting castle clubhouse, The Wizard is a links style course with tall mounds and deep bunkers. I really enjoyed the last two holes which bring water into play on every shot. The par-3 17th shown above, is an island green, the tee box and fairway of the 18th are also islands, while the green is a peninsula. You can read more about the course and clubhouse here.
