Off to See Myrtle Beach's The Wizard

published by Examiner.com (National)    May. 11, 2015

The first stop on a three-part journey through the trilogy of golf courses that make up Myrtle Beach's Mystical Golf trio, we got all up on The Wizard. This dune strewn Dan Maples masterpiece casts a mighty spell on Myrtle Beach golfers. After our round, we dispensed with the hocus pocus of birdie making to pose a few questions to course owner, Claude Pardue.

Myrtle Beach's Mystical Golf is pure magic

published by Travel Times    Apr. 29, 2015

I just had a “Mystical Golf” experience and that’s because the three courses I played in this South Carolina playground are pure magic. Mystical Golf is the company that owns and operates the troika of uniquely named courses - Witch, Wizard and Man-O-War - that sit on land that was once home to a swampy logging forest. Now the lush fairways, groomed greens and ice blue lakes that dot the properties make this a magical oasis and you’d be excused to say that this is the best trio since the Three Tenors. The only thing better than the courses are the packages offered golfers by Mystical Golf. Example: With the 3 day, 3 night Gold Package you get to play 3 rounds on any of the courses plus 1 complimentary round, accommodation at the Mystical Resort Golf Vilas, breakfast each day, a complimentary steak dinner, free lunch at the courses, 2 free beers or soft drinks each round and other goodies. All that for just $237 U.S. per person. Mystical Golf was the vision of a man named Claude Pardue, a larger than life figure who is passionate about the game and talks about his courses like a proud papa. Pardue let his imagination run wild when planning the courses and that resulted in some interesting and unusual features - the Wizard’s clubhouse is a stone castle and Man-O-War’s is a fishing cabin built on stilts. Thankfully, Pardue left the course designs to renowned architect Dan Maples - the owner did make a lot of helpful suggestions - and that resulted in three very different layouts that are a challenge to play but fair to all handicaps. On Day One of my three day visit to Mystical Golf, we played the Wizard, a lovely introduction to the property that has that Scottish links feel about it. The degree of difficulty on this course changes with the season and thankfully the fescue was still dormant the day I arrived. By late spring, however, when the vegetation grows higher, shot accuracy off the tee is required and smart shot making and club selection is a must. This course would put Einstein to the test. The Wizard even offers elevation changes - another unique feature in lowlands Myrtle Beach - and stretches 6,721 yards from the back tees. Pardue tells me there was not one lake on the property shared by the Wizard and Man-O-War but there is now - he created on massive pond that comes into play on five of the Wizard’s holes and 17 of the 18 holes at Man-O-War. Speaking of Man-O-War, this was a delight to play on Day Three of my visit - the back-to-back island greens at 14 and 15 were a real treat for some in my foursome but felt like a Floyd Mayweather 1-2 punch to me. With so much water surrounding this course, I quickly figured out why Pardue opted for a fishing cabin look for his clubhouse. The real treat for me at Mystical Golf is the Witch, a spellbinding course that is ranked among the best in the state that features some of the top holes in the country. The front at the Witch may be the best opening side of any golf course in North America and the stretch from 4 to 7, with their Monet backdrops, will test your power of concentration. I will have a lot more on my experience at Mystical Golf in the July issue of TraveLife magazine so stay tuned. -- Marc Atchison
